Picea orientalis - Oriental Spruce
Picea orientalis - Oriental spruce is the eastern equivalent of Norway Spruce. Native to the mountains around the eastern end of the Black Sea.
Evergreen with a medium size. It has small needles that are dark green and slender cylindrical cones which are red/purple when young that mature to a dark brown.
Oriental spruce prefers a moist soil and has been planted throughout the UK since it was introduced in the 19th century. We started producing this species as our clients sought alternative conifer species for timber production. In the native range Picea orientalis is an important timber species and the wood is used for construction, joinery and flooring purposes.
